Do you own a telescope? If so, you have the chance to explore some of the same celestial marvels that have been captured by the Hubble Space Telescope over the past 35 years! We invite you to participate in the “Hubble’s Night Sky Observing Challenge,” a year-long stargazing initiative that commemorates Hubble’s incredible contributions to our understanding of the universe.
In this challenge, stargazers are encouraged to find safe locations with dark skies away from city lights. On clear nights, participants will look skyward, using telescopes and the provided star and finder charts to observe iconic nebulae and galaxies that Hubble has previously studied. How many of these astronomical treasures can you identify?
This exciting challenge is being coordinated in collaboration with The Astronomical League. Participants can aim for recognition of their achievements through two levels of the Challenge, and membership in The Astronomical League is not required to participate. For more details about requirements and participation, visit The Astronomical League’s Hubble Night Sky Observing Challenge page.
Star Parties Encouraged!
In addition to individual observations, amateur astronomy clubs, science centers, and museums are encouraged to organize star parties using monthly target lists. These gatherings allow the public to experience the wonders of the night sky firsthand.
Tips for Participants:
- Monthly Lists: Each month will feature a specific list of night sky targets. It is recommended to use a large backyard telescope for optimal viewing.
- Telescope Recommendations: For the best results, a telescope with at least a six-inch diameter is suggested. While binoculars can help find some brighter objects, larger telescopes yield a more detailed view.
- Comparing Views: Participants are encouraged to compare their observations with Hubble’s images. It’s essential to note that viewing through Earth’s atmosphere may distort images.
- Visibility Considerations: Some celestial targets may only be visible at certain latitudes. Monthly targets will include separate lists for Northern and Southern Hemisphere observers.
- Using Finder Charts: Each monthly object list comes with detailed finder charts to assist in locating the targets in the sky. Additional star chart resources can be found through various astronomy apps, software, and books.
Upcoming Monthly Object Lists
Check back monthly throughout 2025 for the latest lists of target objects to observe. Join in on this exciting opportunity to connect with the cosmos and celebrate the legacy of Hubble!
